Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows has opened up about the band’s approach to their next album, emphasizing the importance of taking a break to recharge creatively.
Still riding high on the success of Life Is But A Dream…, released in 2023, the band has plenty to focus on, including a European tour this summer and a few stadium shows with System of A Down. Shadows shared that with so much on their plate, they haven’t put serious thought into album number nine.
A Time to Reflect and Recharge
Speaking with Bradley Hall, M. Shadows explained that the current priority is finishing up their global tour.
“The focus, until recently, was [playing live in] India, Peru, and we want to do something in South America before Life Is But A Dream… is wrapped up,” he shared.
He described how they’re experimenting with different markets across Europe, adding, “I think we’ll probably just spend some time with our families” after wrapping the tour. However, Shadows admitted that the “creative itch” never completely goes away, saying, “You jot down ideas—whether it’s on your iPhone or into Pro Tools—and maybe dig through that bag like Santa’s bag of presents at some point.”
Creative Breaks Fuel Inspiration
Shadows stressed the importance of stepping away from constant stimulation to let creativity flow.
“If you’re always in front of Pro Tools, always consumed by media, playing video games, or listening to podcasts on walks, you’re not really living a life where something can push you off balance,” he explained. He noted that many of the best musical ideas arise unexpectedly.
“The next process would really be taking long walks, going on a bike ride, playing sports—doing things where your mind isn’t consumed by the attention economy.”
A New Chapter, But Not Just Yet
Although Shadows hinted at jotting down riffs and notes, he emphasized that taking a breather is crucial. “We need to live a little bit of life before we go into this next thing,” he concluded.
With a busy tour schedule and a clear commitment to creating something meaningful, Avenged Sevenfold fans may need to wait a bit longer for new music—but M. Shadows assures them it’ll be worth it.
