Robert Smith, frontman of The Cure, revealed on the BBC’s Sidetracked podcast that he avoids streaming music, relying instead on his collection of “loads and loads” of iPods.
Why No Streaming?
“I’ve got playlists, iPods… stickers on them so I know in the dark which one’s gonna play which,” Smith shared. For him, his music collection isn’t about nostalgia but a way to connect with moods and memories.
Thoughts on Modern Artists
While Smith praised the achievements of Charli XCX and Chappell Roan, he admitted their music isn’t what he listens to at home. “I think what they did as artists is fantastic,” he said, adding, “I hate people just sitting there being critical.”
On Handling Criticism
Reflecting on his own experience with critics, Smith explained his philosophy: “You have to develop an ability to ride that kind of criticism… People who criticise you have never done it. It’s invalid.”
Staying True to His Roots
At 65, Smith continues to champion individuality and artistic effort, proving he’s as steadfast as ever in his principles—whether it’s avoiding streaming platforms or dismissing undue negativity.
