Miley Cyrus recently revealed the backstory behind her pole-dancing routine during her 2009 Teen Choice Awards performance of “Party in the U.S.A.” Speaking on Spotify’s Billions Club series, Miley shared that the idea came from her mother, Tish Cyrus. “She always lets me take the blame,” Miley joked, recalling how her mom was “nowhere to be found” when critics slammed the routine.
While the performance sparked controversy at the time, Miley remembers it differently, noting that it was her first time wearing real diamond jewelry on stage. “You guys remember the ice cream cart, but I remember the diamonds,” she said.
In a past TikTok video, Miley also defended the routine, explaining the pole was for “stability” as she performed on top of the ice cream cart. “I had a heel on! What did you want from me?” she said with humor.
“Party in the U.S.A.,” featured on The Time of Our Lives EP, became a massive hit, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and solidifying its place as one of Miley’s most iconic songs.
